Then & Now: Neighborhood Planning in Spokane
Neighborhood planning has been present in the City of Spokane over the past twenty years and while many of the complex issues and opportunities facing the city can be effectively addressed at a citywide level, others need more specific solutions. Neighborhood planning is an opportunity for citizens to shape the neighborhoods where they live, work, own property, or manage a business. The neighborhood planning process may address such issues as land use and zoning, transportation, and urban design issues. The goal of neighborhood planning is for diverse interests to come together and develop a shared vision for their community.

Market Street Revitalization: How Can $17 Million in Revitalization Happen at Once in One of Your Business Centers?
Neighborhood and business center revitalization is challenging to say the least, but pulling off the largest revitalization project takes unprecedented community, business and government coordination – Learn about the work done over the last two years: how ideas grew, how water and sewer services were included, how street trees and pedestrian lighting will enhance a neighborhood business center, how a business center project connects to a new state freeway and why community involvement is crucial to the project’s success

Neighborhood Revitalization: Successful Strategies & Actions for East Central Spokane Neighborhood Renewal
The Community Colleges of Spokane and Eastern Washington University teamed with six community-based organizations to revitalize the East Central Neighborhood in Spokane, Washington, using community service-learning and community engagement of faculty, students, and community organizations, businesses and residents. The results have created a neighborhood plan, on-going business assessment and support, and strategic actions to address poverty and support neighborhood renewal.

Identifying Underutilized Resources in Building Healthier Neighborhoods: A Hillyard, WA Case Study
Service-learning partnerships involving students and neighborhood residents accelerate change in the neighborhood. With such converging trends as oil and water scarcity, climate change and aging, finding a way to accelerate change is critical. This workshop, located in Spokane’s Hillyard neighborhood, will introduce participants to building service-learning partnerships and ways to best utilize the partnerships’ outcomes.
